equipment can do everything that the overhead projector did and much, much more. It can present a wider variety of images, is more flexible and eliminates the repeated cost of preparing overhead transparencies. Q. You have mentioned cost a couple of times, is this equipment expensive? A. Clearly there is an initial 'one off' cost for equipment and installation, although probably less than you'd think. Once we've made the investment there are no repeatable costs and over time we will save money on photocopying and the like. In real terms, we've spent less on this than we would have to spend on, say, two new basses for the band. Q. How will the band and speakers be able to see what's on the screen? A. We have strategically positioned additional monitors on the platform and in the rostrum for the use of band and meeting leaders. Q. My eyesight isn't what it was and I sometimes have trouble reading. Will I be able to read the words on the screen? A. No problem, in fact multimedia might even help! In real terms, the words on the screen will appear about twice the size of words printed in the regular size song book. Also, because of the colours of text and background that will be used, words will be presented in a way that ensures complete clarity. If however you do have difficulty reading the words on any occasion, do let us know and we'll put you in touch with a good optician!! No seriously, do please tell us if this is ever a problem. The beauty of the system is in its flexibility. We can make the text size as big as necessary! Q. Who will control the use of this new equipment? A. Initially, a small group of 'experts'. Then over time, and as we become more familiar with the new equipment, we would expect to open this up to a wider team of 'operators'. I really want to stress that this is a resource that's available to the whole Corps and it is envisaged (and hoped) that all sections and speakers will make extensive use of this facility. I have a feeling that the young folk will be involved too and will probably 'lead the way'!
