Band visit to Portsmouth Citadel - March 31st/1st April 2001

Weekend visit proves value of fellowship and encouragement

From the moment Birmingham Citadel Band (David Nicholson) arrived to set up and enjoy a welcome tea it was clearly evident from the warm welcome and equally enthusiastic response, that it was to be a most enjoyable weekend. A natural and attractive rapport quickly developed between the visiting band and home corps.

A carefully constructed, well-rehearsed, programme provided entertainment, challenge and a clear strong message of what Salvation Army worship is about. The sensible and complimentary use of multimedia added greatly to the understanding and enjoyment. This was apt, as there were at least 9 people there whom had not been in a Salvation Army meeting before. There is a real possibility they will be back!

Sunday meetings led by the band, centring on the theme 'Let's Celebrate Jesus', proved equally well thought out, each item dove-tailing beautifully to inspire and challenge. The spoken messages by Major Samuel Edgar, who proved that PA systems are unnecessary, were made with passion and clarity. Personal testimonies were just that, personal, deeply moving and yet most encouraging.

There is no doubt that such a motivational and helpful weekend is a well worthwhile investment allowing a sharing of faith and worship that encourages, inspires and develops lasting bonds of friendship. "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord."
