The small market town of Wirksworth nestles in the hills to the southern end
of the Pennines. The hills to the west are composed of limestone and those to
the east are sandstone known locally as millstone grit. These have provided the
industry for the town for many years, initially that of lead mining in the
limestone and finally the quarrying of both the gritstone and the limestone.
Latterly, for many years, these industries had not progressed well and so the town itself did not develop into an urban sprawl as many other towns have done, in fact it was starting to deteriorate. In the early 1980’s a town project was started with the aim of renovating the town to return it as far as possible to its 18th and 19th century appearance.
This renovation work was carried out carefully using much professional advice and culminated in the ‘Europa Nostra’ award, an award made by the European Union for outstanding improvement. It also attracted the attention of the Prince of Wales who called the town's revitalisation project ‘brilliantly imaginative’.
And so it was to this beautiful market town the band arrived early evening to see the place bedecked with bunting, Union Jacks and St George's flags. What a welcome. But no, it wasn't for the band! This was mid-June 2002 and the country was gripped with World Cup fever and Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Not only is the town of picture postcard quality, but St Mary's church is stunning. Both externally and internally the church is beautiful, with many interesting features. But don't take our word for it - pay a visit. We are glad we did.

The setting for the festival of music was delightful. The acoustics are ideal for a brass band and, with just under 50 players, we were able to test whether or not the roof could come down!! It stood up well and, judging from the many, many comments from members of the congregation, the sound and quality of playing was much appreciated.

Our programme was, as ever, varied - there really was something for everyone. From Llas Lluvias Grandas on the one hand, with many of the band entering into the spirit with an assortment of percussion instruments, to the majesty of The Kingdom Triumphant. The selection Spirit was brought into the 21st century with a new multimedia presentation, and the timbrels thrilled the congregation with their display to the fast-moving Salvation's Song.

It was the band's first visit to this beautiful venue - we trust it will not be the last. Thanks to everyone who made the evening so special.
