‘Food, fun and fellowship’ was the order of the day for past and present members of the band and songster brigade who assembled at the Apollo Hotel early in January.

On arrival we were greeted by our ‘mystery guest’ who presented all of us with a bead necklace to wear, and with the instruction not to say “no” or “know” throughout the evening. The penalty of using either of these words resulted in whoever caught you out claiming your necklace, for the object of the game was to win as many as possible by the end of the evening. The game continued throughout the evening and the final tally resulted in one of our younger bandsmen having to count the number of necklaces being worn by a young songster. He obviously enjoyed the task as he wanted to have a recount!

Our mystery guest was in fact Julian Bright from Peterborough who kept us entertained throughout the evening with games, quizzes and stories, plus two cornet solos. One particular game revealed that later this year the Cradle Roll would be increased much to the surprise of one bandsman! We think his wife was teasing him – time will tell!!

Thanks to Julian, Lesley, David, Phil, Jean and the catering staff of the Apollo a superb evening was had by all. It was an occasion to enjoy good food, put the fun back into our fellowship, and spend an enjoyable and relaxed evening with each other.

At the end of a formal dinner many years ago the great Law Lord and Master of the Rolls, Lord Denning was reputed to have concluded the dinner with the following words:
“How good it is to meet with nice people
How enjoyable it is to eat with nice people
How wonderful it is to sleep – WITH A CONTENTED MIND!”
We all left the Apollo with contented minds having thoroughly enjoyed the evening and of the opinion that we should not wait too many years before the next one.
