A capacity audience welcomed the
ISS to the Citadel for what was to be a feast of high quality music and a
no-nonsense message about Jesus Christ. The photos below show
something of the joy in the hearts of the singers and this joy overflowed to
those who were privileged to attend. There is an ever-growing expectation these days for musical events of this nature to be supported by multi-media. We were not disappointed - we were treated to a magnificent display that was totally supportive of the music and the message. |
Birmingham Citadel was jammed solid for the visit of
the International Staff Songsters. A great warmth of spirit overflowed from the
Songsters and the audience were quick to respond. Songs included the strong
rhythms of War on the Floor and a lovely 'a capella' arrangement of
Jesus, Lily of the Valley. Another major highlight was Eric Ball’s
Magnificat and a relaxed rendering of You are the Light.
We were even treated to an enactment of the David and Goliath bible story.
Shelley Knuckey and Lyndon Bexon were admirably suited to their parts, although
there was some relief that David did not cut off Goliath’s head this time. The
festival concluded with the cathedral like quality of John Rutter’s The Lord
Bless You and Keep You, which brought a hushed conclusion to a memorable
occasion.
During Sunday’s ‘full house’ meetings, we were treated to more charming song
arrangements, none more so than Lt Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen’s Childhood
Suite in which children's songs like Yes, Jesus Loves Me were
arranged in various classical styles, demanding high skills from the pianist
Amanda Batt.
Major Bill Cochrane, an inspirational speaker, illustrated that we should be
drawn to God and respond to his leadings. These thoughts were encapsulated in
the final song We Saw Love, arranged by the leader Andrew Blyth.
Thank you Songsters for a challenging and spiritually uplifting weekend.
