Two large audiences enjoyed this year’s Symphony Hall Christmas presentation titled ‘Rejoice.’ The production for the first time passed fully into the hands of Graham Lamplough, and he brought several innovative features to the occasion. One outstanding highlight was a presentation of excerpts from the stage production ‘Scrooge.’ The audience loved it.

There were so many other highlights, that it is difficult to know where to begin. The two soloists, our own Stephanie Lamplough and the guest soloist Damian Wileman communicated well with the listeners. Stephanie was particularly outstanding in ‘Rejoice Greatly O Daughter of Zion’ from Handel’s Messiah. Damien brought a refreshingly convincing interpretation to his chosen solos.

Of course as usual the Primary children stole the show with their simple presentation of the Nativity Scene, although the shepherds lamb suffered one or two indignities and the Angel’s halo had an inclination to slip.

All the Citadel musical groups were entirely convincing and on top of their form. The Band’s Tudor Christmas Fantasy would have delighted even Henry VIII himself. The 2 great audiences responded well to everything that took place. I think they also enjoyed the links so expertly devised in the multimedia cameos. This all helped to unify the total presentation. The carols were heartily sung by everyone, and the echoes rang round this superb concert hall.

Finally the guest speaker Major Bill Cochrane, effectively brought together all the elements of the production, which truly displayed the wonder of the Christmas story.
