Birmingham Citadel Band

Birmingham Citadel Band has a long history and has been widely regarded as one of the foremost Salvation Army Bands for many years.  Serving members are all dedicated Christians and are very much committed to spreading the Christian gospel through the medium of the brass band.  Their time is given voluntarily and, as well as Sunday worship, they generously give of their time for rehearsals and musical festivals.

A wide variety of occupations is represented including teachers, tradesmen, salesmen, managers, accountants, not to mention students that are studying at the local universities and Music Conservatoire.  Current members of Birmingham Citadel Band are also members of other premiere Salvation Army brass bands including both the International Staff Band and the Household Troops Band.

The band is very much a part of the evangelical programme of the corps and is regularly seen and heard participating in the open-air witness in the city centre.  We are justly proud of the fact that we still march the streets of our city and present a vital and relevant open-air ministry as part of our corps outreach.

As well as the participation in Sunday worship, the band has a busy programme of concerts and festivals, but also recognises the importance of the outreach to the elderly and ill by visiting homes and hospitals each Sunday.

In recent years the band has performed in premiere UK concert halls such as The Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham's magnificent Symphony Hall as well as touring the USA (twice) and, more recently, Canada in 2011.  The band also records a new CD biannually.

In 2011 Bandmaster Gavin R Lamplough was commissioned bandmaster, succeeding his father Graham W Lamplough.  Gavin has been a soldier at Birmingham Citadel since 1997.  On leaving the Royal Northern College of Music and completing his studies in 2000, Gavin returned to the Midlands to work as a freelance trumpet player.  His orchestral experience includes work with orchestras such as the CBSO and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.  Prior to being appointed bandmaster he was principal cornet of the Birmingham citadel salvation army band recording solos on CD recordings and playing as cornet soloist throughout the UK and abroad.  He is also a founder member of The Salvation Army ensemble Vision Brass.  Gavin has recently performed trumpet concertos, as well as more varied recitals at venues such as Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and the Sage in Gateshead.  Gavin has featured on numerous CD recordings, including several as a trumpet or cornet soloist.  As well as performing, Gavin is also in demand as a teacher.  He was on the teaching staff at Birmingham Conservatoire Junior School and in 2008 took up the post of Director of Music at Stafford Independent Grammar School.  Having music he has written published, Gavin is also recognised as a composer and arranger.
